My husband is currently in the 360 degree review process in his job. He's been telling me that some of his people feel uncomfortable about giving feedback, and that all of them find the process a boring task.
I see it in a completely different way! Feedback is golden. Feedback will put more money in your pocket. Feedback is your friend. For freelancers, feedback is imperative.
When you're asked to review yourself, the information you add to your review lets your leaders know about triumphs they may not have known about otherwise. This is your sales copy. Go ahead and brag.
Thoughtful feedback from intelligent colleagues is like a free management seminar. Think about this: if you implement the suggestions for improvement, you will be a better, more effective leader or entrepreneur in 12 months from now. Growth in professional skills means growth in pay (even if you have to go somewhere else to get it). Just make sure you thank your reviewers for the service they're performing for you.
Freelance writers and entrepreneurs can also get that career-enhancing feedback. And it's even more valuable to us, because our income is even more directly related to our professional skillset at any given moment. Ask respected business partners or key clients to answer the following question honestly for you: "What one thing would you change about my work skills (style, etc.) if you could?" Don't let them answer right away. Give them a few days to think about the best possible answer. Then take action based on the suggestions.
They'll make you a better leader, and it won't cost you a thing!
Feedback is Invaluable
